Wanderers win away at Barnhall

MU Barnhall  R.F.C.   17        Wanderers F.C.      26

A workmanlike performance throughout the team provided the basis for Wanderers win away to MU Barnhall on Saturday afternoon.

First blood went to WFC after 11 mins when winger Kelvin Leahy crossed for an unconverted try. MU Barnhall struck back 6 mins later when a good break from the 10 metre line led to a try under the posts to give them a 7-5 lead. Wanderers were winning and moving ball quickly and on 23 mins Mikey Russell was put through a gap in midfield to gallop over from 27 metres out with Conor Byrne converting for a 7-12 lead.

Good possession was paying dividends and 5 mins before half time the pressure paid off when centre Martin O’Neill barged over with some help from second row Geoff Mullan. Conor Byrne converted. Barnhall attacked from the kick off and a missed touch kick gave possession to Barnhall who eventually got over for an unconverted try just on half time to leave the score 12-19.

The first try of the second went to WFC when a Conor Byrne pass put Martin O’Neill in under the post for an easy conversion for Conor Byrne and a lead of 12-26.

Barnhall came back into the game running the ball at every opportunity but the WFC defence was good until the 74th minute when Barnhall got the try they were looking for. However a missed conversion left WFC with a 9 point lead which they held to the finish for a good opening win to the season.
