Wanderers Firsts pipped by Malahide in Merrion Road

Wanderers       12        Malahide          13

This was one that got away.  WFC had the chances and possession but in an error ridden performance leading to numerous turnover balls Malahide seized the initiative to win by the narrowest of margins.

After 15 minutes Wanderers knocked on at their own scrum and from the subsequent Malahide put in they ran the ball, with the blind side winger coming from the left wing, made the extra man to score in the right corner, after poor defensive work by Wanderers, and with the convert good from far out Malahide led 0 – 7.

During a ten minute spell WFC went on the attack but each move ended with mistakes giving possession back to Malahide. However on 27 minutes a Malahide yellow card offence handed WFC a penalty converted by Peter Brougham. In the run up to half time WFC missed a penalty and converted one, to  leave the score 6 – 7 at half time.

The second half was a fraught affair with many penalties and yellow cards being shown. The sides exchanging penalties – WFC scoring two minutes after half time to lead 9 – 7 and Malahide going ahead again in the fifty second minute 9 -10.  A penalty by Peter Brougham after sixty minutes saw WFC lead again 12 – 10 only for Malahide to reclaim the lead  12 – 13 on sixty four minutes.

Wanderers failed to capitalise when they had nuemirical advantage on two occasions in the second half, following two Malahide yellow card offences. Late on WFC also had a yellow card offence but Malahide held out for a one point victory which Wanderers will feel they left behind.
