A Happy, Healthy and Prosperous 2018 to all fellow Wanderers, where ever you may be.
I thought I would update you on a number of matters and the first of these is, of course, rugby.
Our 1st XV have a very busy fixture schedule in the forthcoming period with four UBL league games scheduled from next Saturday, 6 January, to Saturday 3 February 2018. We kick off 2018 with an away game at MU Barnhall on Saturday next 6 January with – note the early KO time of 14.00. MU Barnhall third on 31 points and WFC fourth on 28 points.
The postponed away fixture v Belfast Harlequins has been re-fixed for Saturday 13 January, venue Deramore Park, Belfast, KO off time 14.30. We have a free week on Saturday 20 January and then we have more Ulster opposition with the visits of Dungannon – Saturday 27 January and Rainey – Saturday 3 February – to Lansdowne Road – both with standard UBL kick-off times of 14.30.
So, two away and two home games coming up rapidly and these games will define our season!
SUPPORT is hugely important and I ask as many members as possible to attend these forthcoming matches. If you can’t make the away fixtures, please support the home games – the players on the pitch feel the support, so please attend in numbers and help the side as they strive for the playoffs and promotion.

The WFC 2nd XV currently lead Metro League 3. However it is very tight at the top with only 6 points separating first and fifth places. With five league games to go it’s all to play for, with the top two playing off in the league final. So guys – go for it.

The under 20’s are in rebuilding mode and continue to perform well on the pitch in spite of lack of numbers and size. The type of football and standard they play is a tribute to coaches Shane Robertson and Louis Magee. Keep up the good work. The under 20’s play all their home games at Merrion Road.

The Wanderers Women’s team, having gained promotion last season to Leinster League Division 3, are again going well and lie in third place at the half way stage of this league. They are two points behind second placed Wexford Wanderers, but have a match in hand. Balbriggan are runaway leaders and are unbeaten this season to date. Another great season by the women, keep it up.

The four fundraisers run annually – (i) Golf Classic, (ii) Annual Brochure, (iii) Business Lunch, and (iv) IRFU Raffle – have all been hugely successful and have raised funds in excess of €50,000 for the Club. To all involved a sincere thanks on behalf of the Club with particular mention of a number of the auld faithful – John Callanan, Michael McAuley, Kevin McGowan, Michael McLoughlin, Frank Murray, Albert Rance, Brian Tector, and Andy Whelan – your continued support and effort is much appreciated – please stay young!
There are a good number of ordinary/pavillion members who have not yet paid their subscriptions. We are sure this is an oversight and would ask you to rectify with an immediate payment
To all those Life members, who continue to pay a sub/make a donation, we thank you most sincerely for your continued generosity – it really is appreciated. Obviously we are always open to receiving donations from Life members or from whatever source.
A small number of players still have to play and we ask that they pay immediately as there are insurance implicatiions in the event of an accident.
Payment can be made online at Membership.
The now Annual WFC Christmas Lunch was held on 13th December and was possibly the best one yet. With over 120 in attendance the event was held in the ‘ballroom’. Many thanks to David Davis for organising the event, and congratulations to his sidekick, Albert Rance, for carrying the can, on the day of the event. Where else would you have the organiser of an event slipping out of the country on the same day to visit the Northern Lights and pass the baton to his sidekick? The excuse from Mr. Davis was “an early Christmas present from the kids”. In fairness it was a thoroughly enjoyable event with good food, plenty drink and even a late sing song. Well done David, Albert and Fergus.
Next on the list is the WFC Annual Dinner on Tuesday 13th February 2018. This sells out quickly so get your booking to organiser, David Davis – yes David Davis – he has assured us he will not be travelling any time around that date and is available to take bookings as usual. Thanks David.
150 YEARS OF WANDERERS FC
Plans for the celebration of 150 Years of Wanderers FC are well under way for season 2019/2020. A large sub- committee, under the chair of Michael McLoughlin, has already met on a number of occasions with much work already done to date.
First and foremost a date for your diary:
SATURDAY 16th NOVEMBER 2019 – WANDERERS FC ‘SESQUICENTENNIAL’ BLACK TIE GALA BALL AT RDS
Since the announcement of the date twenty-five tables have been booked for this event.
A special number of smaller committees have been formed with individual chairs to cover (i) Rugby, (ii) History, (iii) Gala Ball 2019, (iv) Sponsorship, (v) Communications, (vi) Apparel & Clothing, (vii) Gala Concert 2020 and (viii) WFC Annual Dinner
The main committee is below,

In addition to the main committee Kevin Brophy, John Callanan, David Davis, Larry Fenelon, Nora Hoffman, Joe McDermott, Kevin McGowan, Denis O’Flynn, David Poppelwell, Noel Rabbitte, Sean Scaife and Brian Tector are serving on committees with a specific task/brief.
As you will note a sub-committee is dealing with the history of the Club, rewriting and updating where required and writing the actual history of the last fifty years, since our Centenary publication of 1969/1970.
I am sure, given all the family connections involved, there is memorabilia of Wanderers in many a household, whether photographs, pictures, newspaper articles, scrap books, fixture cards, newsletters, ties or jerseys or whatever, that would be of interest to Wanderers and we would be glad to have it and preserve it with all other Club records. Obviously for any material required for family purposes we will give an absolute assurance that it will be returned immediately we have copied/photographed the original documents. If you do have memorabilia of any kind please contact the Chair of the History Sub-Committee: Tom McCormack : tel : 086-245 4215 ; email ; firstname.lastname@example.org. Tom will ensure everything is handled in an efficient and diplomatic manner.
Much work to be done but we are up and running with a view to providing a schedule of events, matches and functions worthy of celebrating a Club which is a founding member of the IRFU, 150 years in existence and that Club is YOUR CLUB – WANDERERS FC.
Regards and again best wishes for 2018.
