AIL Div. 2B Round 14 Saturday 29 February 2020
Greystones 3 Wanderers 19
Another match played in trying weather conditions had the desired outcome for Wanderers when they had a deserved 3-19 win away from home, scoring three tries without conceding a try, on Saturday last.
First blood went to Greystones when they kicked a penalty after four minutes and things looked ominous for the visitors. However periods of sustained pressure by Wanderers paid dividends on 28 minutes. Following a strike against the head on the ‘Stones five meter line the Wanderers pack recycled on five occasions which led to prop Kieran Stokes crossing for a try to give WFC a two point lead. Conor Byrne missed the difficult conversion and half time arrived with Wanderers leading 3-5.
Wanderers controlled the second half. They went on the offensive from the restart. A clever kick off by Conor Byrne brought play into the Greystones 22 – even if it was a ‘Stones throw in, it gave Wanderers a foot hold in Greystones territory. Six minutes into the second half, scrum half, Conor McQuaid, broke on the blind side to run 35 metres and cross for a great try. A superb Conor Byrne conversion, off the post, and Wanderers led 3-12.
Any attacks coming from Greystones were dealt with by a resolute Wanderers defence both backs and forwards. On fifty eight minutes Wanderers pressure again told when a Conor McQuaid off load found prop Aaron O’Callaghan in support, he shook off one would be tackler, put the head down and crossed under the posts (Baird like) for a classic try which Conor McQuaid converted to give Wanderers a 3-19 lead.
With conditions getting worse and the Wanderers handling good the game finished with Wanderers deserved winners. A twenty year hoodoo was broken – Wanderers, not having beaten Greystones in the AIL since the turn of the century, will be happy.
