MILITARY HISTORY SOCIETY OF IRELAND AUTUMN LECTURE SERIES
FRIDAY 12 OCTOBER 2018, 8pm, at Griffith College, South Circular Road
WAR, FRATERNITY and IRISH RUGBY, 1899-1923: the THREE VCs of WANDERERS FC
by Jane Leonard
This lecture is based on original research commissioned in 2007 by the late Maurice Leonard and is dedicated to his memory.
It explores the sporting and military experiences of Robert Johnston, Tom Crean and Fred Harvey and the fraternal loyalties and identities that stemmed from playing rugby in Victorian and Edwardian Dublin.
It challenges some of the myths that have developed about these men and Irish VC winners in general. The lecture will also investigate whether prowess on a rugby pitch transfers to the battlefield.
All those with an interest in the history of Irish rugby and of Irish involvement in the Boer War and the Great War
Admission is free and non-members of the society are welcome.
Further details available on MHSI.ie and Places can be reserved in advance via Eventbrite.ie.
