2nd’s League Campaign Underway
Another sunny September day as we embarked on our League campaign away to Naas.
Due to a combination of circumstances, Wanderers had over twenty players unavailable and thanks to all who answered the call to arms as we managed to assemble a competitive squad for the fixture.
A lively start to the match saw both sides share possession and territory and Wanderers took the lead with a Conor Byrne penalty after 10 mins, but Naas kicked an equalising penalty soon thereafter. The teams continued to test each other out in search of further opportunities and points and the crowd were even treated to Kieran Stokes’ front row kicking game but, alas, to no avail……Ben Stevenson made a couple of strong carries as we again exerted pressure but Naas responded and scored a second penalty to go in 6 – 3 at half-time.
As the second half progressed, Naas were gaining control in the set-pieces and raised the gears to cross for three tries with two converted by the 65th minute. Notwithstanding this, Wanderers kept working in defence and with the ball, and newcomers, Adam McAuliffe and Ben Leahy were among those prominent. A late interception led to a converted try at the final whistle, giving Naas a flattering 32 – 3 victory.
Our late-assembled team, understandably, had little training time together and the squad have plenty to work on ahead of our next League match at home to Barnhall this Sunday 26 September.
