President’s Message – 2016/17
It is with great pride as President of Wanderers FC that I welcome all our members, friends, guests and visiting teams to Lansdowne Road and Merrion Road for what we hope will be a successful year for the club.
It is a great honour for me personally to be elected the 147th president of this great club, and to follow in the footsteps of my father Michael who was president in 1983/84. If I can represent the club to half the level of ‘Lord Hailsham’ it will be a job well done. It seems a long time ago now, and many aspects of rugby have changed in the meantime, but the fundamentals of playing in a great team sport and forging lifelong friendships remains as strong as ever
As the club heads towards its 150th year, we must ensure that the legacy of the founders of the Club is secured, and the foundations for the next 150 years are firmly in place. To do this the club must face the challenges of the modern game, and create an environment where young people want to come and play rugby, and to continue to be members after their playing days as coaches, administrators, and alikadoo’s.
We are delighted to have achieved promotion to division 2B last season, and we are looking forward to the new challenges of the season ahead. To our Club Captain Eoghan Nihill, and his squad, Head Coach Greg Lynch and the Management team under David (Doc) O’Connor, I wish them all well for a successful season ahead.
The 1st Team squad are only one aspect of the Club, and I would like to wish the Captains, players, coaches and management of our Junior squad, Ladies, Under 20’s and Mini &Youths all the best for the season ahead. Our Junior squad are still on a high from their end of season tour to Berlin, whilst the Ladies go from strength to strength, and have become an integral part of the club.
I am delighted that Wanderers will be fielding an under 20 team this year, and a lot of credit must go to Jim Doddy and his team for their work at age grade rugby. I have been involved in coaching at mini & youths level in the Club for the past 7 years, and I see the great work first hand that is involved in developing young players, who will hopefully go on to represent the club at senior level in the future.
To all our sponsors we thank you once again for your generous support, and your contribution to various events throughout the season and our Club Programme. Our main sponsors are Pernod Ricard through their brand Brancott Estate Wines and MSL Ballsbridge Motors, and their ongoing support is very much appreciated. We would encourage our members and friends to be aware of our sponsors and support them where possible.
Without volunteers the Club could not exist, so to all our unsung heroes giving up their precious time to take on various roles in the Club and serve on committees, your time and effort is much appreciated. To Fergus Moriarty our Clubhouse Manager, and Nora and Sean in the Office, the Club could not function without your fantastic input and dedication.
As with all clubs, we can never have enough volunteers. As the saying goes ‘many hands make light work’, so if you would like to help out in some small way, your input would be greatly appreciated. My contact details are on the club website.
I look forward to seeing you throughout the season supporting our teams from senior to under age level.
President Wanderers F.C. 2016/2017
